I know an ornithologist from Washington state who holds that to really be proficient at field identification of birds, you must be able to identify a bird from five angles: from the front, from the back, from the side, from the underside in flight and from the upperside in flight. Overall this publication contains very good information and includes notable field mark notations in the photos. Roger Tory Peterson was an innovator, as evidenced by the publication of his groundbreaking Field Guide to the Birds in 1934. Kirsten Snyder, 5/31/04 Long-eared Owl (Asio otus) - Raleigh, 1/8/03. It’s incredibly intuitive and a brilliant idea. The trips may last a morning or most of the day. The authors have done an amazing job covering every bird species in a country so rich in bird life.
